Virtua’s Pediatric Mobile Services Unit Celebrates 3 Years of Service

June 30, 2021

Virtua celebrated the third anniversary of its Pediatric Mobile Services program by unveiling a new, kid-friendly exterior for the vehicle

The program-on-wheels visits underserved communities, providing free health screenings, flu shots, diapers, and more for young children. Since the program began, it has provided more than 6,500 children with health screening services in communities across Burlington, Camden, and Gloucester counties.

The outdoor event included live music, vehicle tours, guest speakers, and a bubble burst where children from local daycares used bubble blasters and noise makers to mark the celebratory moment.

Tremendous need exists in the medically underserved areas across our region, and young children often suffer the most. Through a $1 million gift from the Joseph Lacroce Foundation, in June 2018, Virtua Health launched its Pediatric Mobile Services program to address the health and wellness needs of children from birth to age 6. Some services, including flu shots and physicals, are provided to children through age 12.

The Pediatric Mobile Services Unit provides

  • Developmental screenings
  • Oral health education and dental screenings
  • Flu shots
  • Lead blood level screenings
  • Lead education for healthy homes
  • Back-to-school physicals
  • Vision and hearing screenings
  • Community resources
  • Referrals to specialized services

The program equips parents/guardians with the knowledge and resources they need to help their children grow and thrive. It also engages the community in non-clinical ways, providing free diapers, wipes, formula, books, blankets, clothing, snacks, and toys—all thanks to the generosity of donors.

“The earlier we reach children, the more significant our intervention can be — setting kids up for a lifetime of good health,” says Maria Emerson, director of rehabilitation for Virtua’s pediatric and community-based services.
