Virtua’s Physicians Make a Lasting Impact Through Philanthropy

Why Physician Giving Matters

Every day, Virtua physicians go above and beyond to care for patients and strengthen the health of our community. For many, that commitment extends beyond the exam room through philanthropy. Whether supporting innovative patient care programs, medical education, colleague wellness, community outreach, or resources for those facing life’s greatest challenges, these physician donors are investing in a healthier future for South Jersey. Their stories reflect a shared belief that each of us has the power to make a difference.

Together through philanthropy, our physicians are creating meaningful change and inspiring others to take part—extending their collective impact far beyond the patients they serve each day.

Last year, I was proud to establish the Dr. Mary Campagnolo Fund for Excellence in Family Medicine Education, turning my passion for family medicine into an initiative that will bolster the experience of Virtua’s family medicine resident physicians and empower future leaders in my beloved specialty.

I encourage all of my colleague physicians, no matter your specialty, role, or how long you have been practicing, to search your hearts and let your giving follow. You don’t have to create a special fund to make a big difference. From community health programs, to nursing scholarships, to patient care and beyond, there’s something for everyone. I urge you to make a gift of an amount that’s meaningful to you. Make it your habit, and you will feel the joy of knowing that you are creating a healthier tomorrow for families in South Jersey.

Why did I become a doctor? The cliché answer, of course, is to help people. All those years ago, little did I know that “help” was going to take the form of a non-clinical interaction. I refer to philanthropy…the act of giving to improve a situation, relieve suffering, and positively impact the goals of individuals and organizations. Philanthropic opportunities go beyond monetary altruism and include volunteering time, knowledge, and mentorship.

The investment Virtua has made in our community is supported by the generosity of those who believe in the mission. The many impactful initiatives improving our neighbors’ lives have reduced inequalities, encouraged social change, and furthered Virtua’s positive reputation for giving back.

So why do I give? By donating, I experience personal fulfillment, resulting in a renewed sense of purpose, knowing that I am part of an organization that is truly making a difference. I also hope to be a role model for my peers and younger medical professionals. Finally, it has been rewarding to see numerous donations to Virtua over the years made by grateful patients and their families supporting the Mobile Health & Cancer Screening Unit and Camp Oasis.

For me, Winston Churchill captured the spirit of giving perfectly: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Erik DeLue, MD

Simply stated, charity is very important to me. It gives me a sense of purpose and self-worth. There’s a great feeling in knowing I can make a positive difference by supporting causes that matter. And although my charitable giving is diverse, no cause has more importance to me than Camp Oasis. Kids are resilient. But there can be no greater trauma for a child than the illness, and in these cases often terminal illness, of a parent. Life is not fair, and nothing proves that truth more than a kid who loses their parent. I am very proud of Virtua for hosting Camp Oasis, and to support Camp Oasis in my own small way is an honor that gives me great happiness. Perhaps money can buy happiness when it is given to support an imperative that you love.

Richard Kader, DO

Over the course of my career at Virtua, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside patients and families through some of the most meaningful—and often most challenging—moments of their lives. Those experiences have shaped not only the physician I am, but the person I continue to become.

I often think of a patient I cared for years ago – an older gentleman who came in frequently, not just for medical care, but because he needed connection. Over time, our visits became less about diagnoses and more about listening, reassuring, and simply being present. That experience reminded me that what we provide as physicians goes far beyond treatment. It’s about showing up for people when they need it most.

Richard Kader, DO

Supporting Virtua through the Give for Good campaign is deeply personal for me. It is about giving back to the system that allows us to care for our patients with compassion, dignity, and excellence. It is also about strengthening the resources that support not just medical care, but the human connection that defines what we do every day.

What inspires me most is knowing that together, we can extend our impact beyond the exam room. When we give as a community of physicians, we are investing in something greater than ourselves, and ensuring that every patient who comes through our doors feels supported, valued, and truly cared for.

I encourage my fellow physicians to join in this effort. Even a small act of giving, when multiplied across our physician community, becomes something powerful. It reflects who we are at our best: not only committed to healing, but to serving with purpose, compassion, and heart.

Physicians dedicate their lives to caring for others. Navigating full schedules, increasing demands for efficiency, and emotional strain can take a significant toll on their well-being. As a result, performance suffers and affects patient outcomes. On the other hand, when physicians feel supported and valued, engagement and retention improve, which enhances patient care. Supporting physician wellness is not only an investment in the health of those who care for others, but also an investment in the quality of healthcare itself. Through philanthropy, we can help provide resources for mental health support, emotional resilience programs, and opportunities for professional growth, ensuring that physicians thrive while continuing to serve their communities.

Ever since I joined Virtua as an obstetrician gynecologist, I have felt I found my home. Virtua truly lives up to its mission. We take care of the whole patient, whether there is food insecurity, housing insecurity, or any other need. It’s not just “here for your annual and see you next year.” Virtua offers everything for women, from our Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders program helping pregnant and postpartum moms, to our menopause program. We are helping so many women who had previously gone unheard. Virtua listens, and grows every year to provide the services the women of South Jersey need. I am so proud to work at Virtua. It is my honor to give back to an organization that truly cares and is truly here for good.

Seeing the daily impact we have on patients’ health crises and challenges is fulfilling for all of us involved in healthcare. As I interact with patients, I am constantly reminded that our community includes friends, neighbors, and families that we impact as well. The smiles and simple expressions of gratitude of our patients and their families tell us how we make a difference in their lives each day. Philanthropy helps support the increasing breadth and excellence of services at Virtua. I take joy in supporting our Virtua community and our patients by participating in the Give for Good campaign.

Angel Rodis, MD

I moved to New Jersey with my young family many years ago and joined a small pulmonary practice. At that time, we didn’t know many people, but through Virtua (then the West Jersey Health System) and the South Jersey community, we quickly felt at home. Over the years, Virtua became more than just a place where I practiced medicine – it became part of our lives and part of our community. That is one of the reasons supporting Give for Good through philanthropic giving means so much to me.

As a pulmonary physician, I have seen how much care for lung cancer patients has changed over the years. Early in my career, most patients were diagnosed at advanced stages, and treatment options were limited. Today, thanks in part to early screening programs supported by philanthropy, we are able to detect lung cancer at an earlier stage, resulting in better outcomes.

I am proud to support Virtua’s philanthropy program and grateful for all it does for South Jersey. I believe that even if only one life is saved, it’s all worth it.

James Sanfillipo, MD

I am proud to support Virtua’s Give for Good campaign because it reflects the very reason many of us chose careers in healthcare—to serve, to care, and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Through my work as a physician, I see firsthand the impact that compassionate care and access to resources can have on patients and their families. Supporting Give for Good allows us to extend that impact beyond the walls of our clinical work and into the broader community. It helps ensure that important programs—whether focused on patient care, education, or outreach—continue to grow and reach those who need them most, including our own colleagues. Our collective involvement sends a strong message that we believe in Virtua’s mission and are committed not only to delivering excellent care, but to strengthening the community we serve.

Darius Sholevar, MD

Covid was a difficult time for the world as a whole and healthcare in particular. One of my medical assistants told me about some of her own troubles during the shutdown.

With her husband out of work and two small kids at home, she and her family fell behind on their electricity and heating payments in the winter. I was amazed to learn that when she asked for help, Virtua’s Colleague Care Fund was able to cover two months of her past-due utilities. This was not an advance and not a loan, simply an expression of gratitude and support for one of our teammates.

Darius Sholevar, MD

Ever since, I have contributed annually to support the Colleague Care Fund. While it is important for all team members to talk and know each other as people, it is often hard as a physician to be aware of some of the struggles that our colleagues go through.

Contributing to the Colleague Care Fund is a privilege that allows me to help the important team members that help us to be effective as providers and provide excellent care to our patients.

A health system is both a business and a family if run the right way, and it is a privilege to be able to “Give for Good.”

Dana Supe, MD

Throughout my career, I have been motivated by advances in medicine and technology. Medicine is an ever-involving, dynamic field, and keeping up with the latest research, discoveries, and clinical trials is of utmost importance for our patients and nearby communities. In the era of virtual library services, Virtua’s Library Support personnel tirelessly provide a variety of articles, literature, and medical journal links, and support our medical staff, students, residents, and nursing staff through interlibrary loans and more. Having active and prompt library support is essential for academic institutions, our patients, and staff. Therefore, it is not a surprise that I have supported Virtua’s Library Services through my philanthropic contributions.

Craig Turner, DO

As an Emergency Medicine specialist, I am committed to serving and caring for our patients and community. As a Virtua physician, I recognize the struggles of patients daily, from their medical problems, often limited access to health care, and difficulty with obtaining affordable health care. That is why I support Virtua’s Give for Good campaign!

Virtua supports great programs like Mobile Pediatric Services and the Mobile Health and Cancer Screening Unit. Our Eat Well Mobile Grocery store provides fresh foods to communities that are food deserts. These and other programs are crucial.

However, the Patient Care Fund is most important to me. It provides the ability to help others financially when they need it most. Please join me in supporting Virtua’s commitment to our patients in our community and supporting Everyone Always.
