Virtua’s New NICU Infant Nutrition Room will Serve the Needs of Our Tiniest Patients

Virtua Voorhees Hospital’s NICU has expanded with the addition of a dedicated Infant Nutrition Room designed to help our tiniest patients thrive. Together with the NICU team, we recently welcomed the project’s generous donors—including former NICU families—back to celebrate the newly renovated space alongside the care team.

The new Infant Nutrition Room provides a state-of-the-art environment for breast milk storage, processing, and preparation, with nutritionists and specially trained milk technicians tailoring milk to meet each baby’s unique needs. This new addition greatly enhances our NICU team’s ability to deliver optimal nutrition to every infant as well as increased support to breastfeeding mothers.

Features include:

  • An anteroom, a preparation room, and cleanup areas.
  • Two freezers and one large refrigerator with temperature tracking alarms.
  • An infrared spectrometer to analyze human milk macronutrients.
  • A Keriton Kare scanning and barcoding system to streamline workflow, ensure quality control, and provide safe milk administration.

Supporting Mothers in Providing Breast Milk

In 2019, Virtua Voorhees Hospital and Virtua Memorial Hospital were designated as Baby Friendly birth facilities by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc. More than 8,000 babies are born at Virtua’s hospitals each year. The new Infant Nutrition Room is an important part of supporting NICU parents and being “baby friendly.” For mothers with an infant in the NICU, pumping breast milk allows them to contribute to their baby’s care in a very special way.

Powered by Philanthropy

Virtua’s new Infant Nutrition Room was made possible with the support of generous philanthropic partners. We are grateful to all the donors who supported this initiative. Lead supporter, Aaron and Stephanie Krause of Scrub Daddy, Inc. shared their gratitude for the compassionate care their now college-aged twins received:

“We are so thankful that Sophie and Bryce had the amazing care and support of the Virtua NICU team! They made a very scary time as comfortable as possible for our entire family.”
