Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support

Helping Families Navigate Grief and Honor their Child’s Memory

Virtua’s Perinatal Bereavement and Palliative Care program supports families through pregnancy loss or an unexpected fetal diagnosis and helps provide comfort and care for the difficult journey that follows.

As one of the few comprehensive perinatal grief support services in South Jersey, this program is available for any family in need of support. Our compassionate staff are specially trained in the emotional impact of loss and how to support bereaved parents with empathy and love.

Powered by philanthropy, this program ensures that individuals affected by pregnancy and infant loss have access to a multidisciplinary range of services that offer comfort and support during an incredibly difficult time. In 2024, we provided support to 133 local families. We are deeply grateful for our compassionate donors— especially Run with the Docs, an annual 5K run/1-mile walk that has raised over $400,000 for this impactful program over the years.

Gifts to this fund help us to:

  • Meet with parents immediately in the hospital, providing personalized bedside care and support
  • Connect parents to the Hoping/Unite Grief Support Group
  • Provide comfort items for families, including memory boxes, books, resource materials, and more
  • Help cover funeral or burial expenses for families experiencing financial hardship
  • Facilitate training for clinical staff on communicating compassionately
  • Host a biennial conference to educate health care providers across the U.S. and Canada
  • Maintain the Angel Garden at Virtua Voorhees Hospital — a peaceful outdoor sanctuary featuring a waterwall with plaques for babies to be remembered
  • Invite families to annual remembrance ceremonies

Together, we can ensure that local families who face this indescribable heartache are not alone and have the resources and support they need.

Run with the Docs is a special 5k run and 1-mile walk created in 2015 by a committee of caregivers who recognized the need for additional support for families who experience the tragedy of miscarriage or infant loss. Through its dedicated group of organizers, sponsors, and volunteers, Run with the Docs, welcomes nearly 1,000 participants at its event each year and has raised more than $400,000 for this impactful fund.
